Vijay Krishna Acharya
Director of Dhoom 3, Thugs of Hindustan

Along with film commissions, line producers play a major role in pushing for locations. We shot in Malta for Thugs of Hindostan. Vaibhavi Merchant was the choreographer, and the dancers were flown from Greece to India to rehearse, and then the shooting was done in Greece. We chose Greece because we wanted that visual effect, and the film was already set in a quasi-realist world with spectacular locations like Ladakh and Rajasthan. We were able to get a rebate in Greece, and that is also the reason why Greece was chosen. Line producers usually show us images and catalogues and then negotiate financial packages for shooting. We often use Google Maps for storyboarding. Easy access to locations is usually a major consideration—the availability of direct flights and hotels, and access to food that would suit the taste of an Indian crew. The availability of junior artists and hotels at the location helps to get rebates for the production.
