Nikhil Advani
Director of Kal Ho Na Ho; Writer of several films including Patiala House

Overseas marketing is of no consequence to us anymore, unless you’re a big star like Shahrukh Khan. The desire for overseas locations is also changing, thanks to the films that are being made by Ayushman, etc. All these filmmakers who are coming in now, writers like Gaurav Solanki and Nitesh Verma, the makers of Stree, Bala—are focused on reaching out to the heartland.

For Patiala House, we shut down Southall for a day, which needed a year of planning. We’d have to go meet the councillor, we’d have to go meet the police, the local authorities—everyone in Southall had to be informed. There had to be a community meeting, explaining to everyone why we had to shut down. Bus routes had to be changed, because buses cannot be stopped, fire services cannot be stopped either. All cars had to be removed, because we had to put in cars from the 1980s.
