Mujhse Dosti Karoge

The film shows Raj (Hrittik Roshan), Pooja (Ranu Mukherjee), and Tina (Kareena Kapoor) growing up together in Shimla as kids until Raj’s parents decide to move to London. Raj, who fancies Tina, asks her to write to him by email. Pooja, who has a crush on Raj, starts writing letters to Raj while signing them as Tina. After many years, when Raj comes back to Shimla, he gets attracted to the glamorous Tina but is surprised when she feigns ignorance about some of the things that she shared in ‘her’ letters. Pooja feels rejected but plays along as Tina is her best friend. Pooja comes to London to study, and during a sightseeing tour, Raj realises that it was Pooja and not Tina who wrote the letters to him, and it was with her that he shared a deep bond. Pooja tells him that it is too late and decides to sacrifice her love for her friendship with Tina. After several twists and turns, Raj and Pooja get united, with both Tina and the family members realising that they loved each other.

    Film Location Analysis

    By Shikha Jhingan

The film was shot in Greater London, where Raj’s character is based. Apart from showing us aerial views of London, the director of the film chose to shoot in Kensington Gardens, the Lake District, Camden, Knightsbridge, and Westminster areas of London.

In the song ‘Anjani si Andekhi,’ we see Raj in Kensington Gardens and then move towards the Albert Memorial Museum, where he dances at the iconic location with other background dancers. In this song, we see a mobile Raj quickly moving through several parts of London, including the ‘Out of Order’ art installation at Kingston created with 12 red telephone boxes and the Lancashire Cricket Pavilion. The song is distributed across the continent, as we see Tina (Kareena Kapoor) and Pooja (Rani Mukherjee) singing the song in the green meadows and snow-covered hills of Switzerland. While Raj is established as a city-bred, cosmopolitan youngster working in a corporate setting, the two young women are glamorously dressed and shown cycling against these natural landscapes, carrying baskets of naturally growing flowers that match the colours of their designer clothes.

In the second half of the film, we see Raj and Pooja spending time with each other in London and striking a deep bond. The sites that they visit include the London Eye, Camden Market, Leicester Square, the Empire House in Brampton, and the Oratory, a Catholic church in London. ‘Jane dil mein’ with Pooja and Raj was shot in Switzerland, while the title track of the film with all three stars was shot in the Lake District in Cumbria.

The film’s relationship to space is aligned with the visual design of Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham. In an interview, Kunal Kohli shared that he decided to make Mujhse Dosti Karoge after Karan Johar shared the basic idea of the story. Kohli then developed the narrative further and approached Yash Chopra, who produced the film. What remains common to Kabhie Kushi Kabhie Gham and Mujhse Dosti Karoge are costume designs by Manish Malhotra and production design by Sharmishta Roy. Further, Tina’s character in the film as a vivacious, chatty, and overconfident girl is very similar to Pooja's or Poo’s character in K3G.

Interestingly, the sequences that show the exteriors of Tina and Pooja’s homes in Shimla were shot at Span resorts in Manali. Thus, the film presented only exotic, sanitised spaces in both India and London where the star bodies of Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, and Rani Mukherjee could be located.

In the last section of the film, when Tina comes to London, we see the three meeting in locations like Harrods for shopping in the Knightsbridge area, the Warner Village movie theatre at Leicester Square, and a quaint street cafe at St. Christopher’s Place. This further establishes Tina’s character as restless, drawn towards window shopping, and constantly in need of consumption-driven leisure.
