Two songs in the film – ‘Hosanna’ and ‘Omana Penne’ are partly shot in Malta. Choreographed by Flexy Stu, and lensed by Manoj Paramahamsa, the picturesque locales of Malta were captured for the first time in South Indian cinema. Director Gautam Menon’s desire to feature ‘churches, water and caves’ was fulfilled by the location that offered all of the above and much more. Scenes were filmed in different locations across Malta including Valletta, Mdina, Gozo and Comino. While ‘Omana Penne’ was shot along the coastline, exploiting Malta’s sandy pebbled beaches, secret creeks and coves, and the rugged cliffs overlooking the azure Mediterranean Sea, the song ‘Hosanna’ was mostly shot on location in the historic fort city of Mdina. A 26-member crew traveled to Malta for a 10-day shoot that cost approximately 90,000 Euros. Gautam Menon said about the production: “It has been quite an experience…except for the weather, which is too similar to Chennai in terms of heat: We expected it to be cooler. But the locations were fantastic.” Back home the press reported that Director Gautam Menon has “discovered a new location – the beautiful islands of Malta”. The Maltese Film Commission and the Armed Forces of Malta are thanked in the credits for facilitating visas and shooting permits and arranging for helicopters at short notice for filming the spectacular aerial shots over Comino. The various councils and city mayors of Malta and Gozo are also thanked for permitting extensive filming in their localities. The romantic song ‘Hosanna’ is shot in the beautiful ancient fort city of Mdina. An unrealistic fantasy sequence, the song cuts abruptly from its Chennai location where we see Kartik (Silambaran) going into ecstasies each time he sees Jessie (Trisha), to the Maltese location of Mdina where he is seen serenading her along with an entourage of chorus dancers. The dancers included local Maltese talent Melvin Monreal and the song was crooned by Vijay Prakash of Slumdog Millionaire’s ‘Jai Ho’ fame. The ancient fortress city of Mdina, its noble imposing architecture, baroque cathedral and 18th century museum, provided the ambience for this ecstatic love.  Mdina’s ancient stone walls and bastions, historic gates and Mediterranean Sea views serve as a backdrop to stage this monumental if impossible love, While the terraces and cobbled steps of Mdina’s provide the perfect stage for the hero and his chorus of singers and dancers who serenade the heroine, the medieval balconies, flower lined porches and palazzos frame her like a fairy tale princess greeting her subjects or a star greeting her admirers. The maze of myriad alleyways, marked with secret colored doors, and lanterns lend an air of mystery to the sequence. The song culminates in a village feast that underlines the Christian theme of the film and Jessie’s Christina identity.
