    Film Location Analysis

    By Shikha Jhingan

The film was shot in Romania, and the shooting locations were woven into the narrative. Sara’s story in Romania opens with a highway looking into the horizon, with ‘Romania’ as text appearing on screen. We are introduced to Sara, whose father is part of an international syndicate in the underworld. We see Sara in a large pastoral landscape, riding a horse. This sequence is built through intercutting between Sara and Mark, who takes a fancy to the young woman, and a group of men from the underworld sitting in a gazebo negotiating a deal with each other. The camera locates Sara’s body in a primordial space that is accessible to Mark’s voyeuristic gaze. Meanwhile, the gangsters are distributing territories among themselves to control the sale of drugs and armaments.

The film captures some iconic locations in Romania, but these are stitched together without adhering to any spatial continuity. Here, the touristic vision is transformed into a darker register, turning the filmed spaces into a setting for violent encounters. For instance, the Corvin Castle is framed from different angles as we hear the gangsters speaking to each other on the phone. Thus, a heritage site is alluded to as being the gangster’s den.

The romantic scenes between Raftaar Singh and Sara were shot mainly at the Vidaru dam in the Fagaras Mountains, Romania. In the song ‘Mahi Aaja,’ we see Raftaar imagining himself with Sara in Bucharest. With the help of drone shots, the visual scape creates a dramatic effect as a group of dancers in colourful clothes surround the two lovers in a geometric formation on a narrow archway, between the wall of the dam and lake Vidaru. These shots are intercut with the protagonist dancing on the façade of the Romanian Athenaeum (or the grand concert hall). When Raftaar Singh comes to Romania, ‘Mahi Aaja’ is reintroduced. The locations for this sequence take us to the main square of Sibiu, a medieval town in central Romania.

The Transfagarsan highway, which lends itself well to aerial views, was captured in the film for several sequences. The director, Prabhu Deva, posted pictures of himself on the highway with the iconic view of the zig-zag roads during the shooting of the film.

Another sequence that shows Sara getting married to Mark in a church was shot at Biserica Stanful Anton, one of the oldest churches in Bucharest. In the climax, the film jumps to the Corvin castle in Hunedoara, which has many Gothic and mythic tales attached to it. It is here that Mark challenges Raftaar. Sara, in her wedding dress, stands witness to the violent encounter between Raftaar and Mark’s men. The use of this popular tourist site for filming was highly publicised by the production company to promote the film just before its release.
