Saaho

Saho is an action film about the transnational operations of a gang and their hunt by two undercover cops. The film opens with the assassination of Narantak Roy (Jackie Shroff), who was leading a massive business empire in Waaji City. The tussle for succession begins between Devraj (Chunky Pandey) and Vishwank Roy (Arun Vijay), who is considered Roy's ‘secret’ son. The scene shifts to Bombay, where Ashok Chakravarthy (Prabhas), a secret agent, is trying to solve a 2000 crore heist crime. He is assisted by Amritha Nair (Shraddha Kapoor) and others. They identify Jai (Neil Nitin Mukesh) as the culprit. Ashok and Amritha get romantically involved with each other. In a spiral of events, it is discovered that Jai is the secret agent, while the man pretending to be Ashok Chakravarthy is Saaho, who has committed the theft. Saaho disappears, and Amritha is given the task of becoming a double agent, using her romantic entanglement with Saaho to nab him. The film is crafted through high-action sequences shot across Dubai, Austria, and Mumbai. At the end, Saaho’s real identity is revealed when all the loose ends between Vishwank and Roy and their legacy are unearthed.

    Film Location Analysis

    By Shikha Jhingan

This high-action film with a heist theme, an ensemble cast, and a complicated plot was shot in Hyderabad, Abu Dhabi, and Austria. Locations in Austria in the film were used for shooting dream sequences depicting the romance between Saaho (Prabhas) and Amritha (Shraddha Kapoor). These sequences rupture the overall dark look of the film. Particularly notable is the use of bright yellow and red flowing gowns worn by Amritha, which provides a contrast to the snow-clad vistas in the Tyrol region of the country. The opening of the song is grafted with an electric guitar that acts as a sonic bridge. With the use of crane and drone shots, we come closer and move away from the glamorous bodies of the two stars placed on an iron deck overlooking the alpine mountains. The flow of the brightly coloured fabric, creating a trail of movement and energy in rhythm with the song, adds to the spectacle. The rest of the song was shot in a range of popular tourist destinations in Austria. These include the Highline 179 suspension bridge and the Red Bull Hangar at Salzburg. Every shift in location shows the stars in new attire and hairstyles. Narratively, these locations have no connection with the film, and the song works to draw our attention away from the gang wars that frame the film.

Another important song sequence begins with an extended prelude. This is the moment in the film when we learn that Saaho is a thief, putting Amritha, the police officer, in a quandary as she has fallen in love with him. Saaho’s ambivalent character mixed with his star persona is mined in the song, shot extensively in Croatia. In the prelude, with the help of VFX effects, the film shows the bare-bodied hero jumping off a cliff while chasing a backpack. A pack of glamorous-looking women and his aide, David, are looking at the cliff to see if he can get hold of the backpack. Saaho manages to strap the bag on and open the parachute. He releases the parachute and lands on his feet at a spectacular site with the blue sea dotted with sailing boats. This leads us to the ‘Bad Boy’ song, which shows Saaho performing and dancing with a group of Caucasian women dressed in beach wear. Jacqueline Fernandes is the highpoint of the song as the lead performer. The ‘Bad Boy’ song was filmed at Park Plaza Verudela and the beach Verudela in Pula, Croatia. An interesting visual pattern in the song is the interspersing of beach scenes, swimming pools, and the sea front with those of a desert landscape lined with black cars, armoured tanks, army helicopters, heavy ammunition, and currency notes. The song shows the geographical spread of international gangs and their access to men, money, cash, arms, and women through a curious mix of leisure and violence.

The song ‘Baby won’t you tell me’ was shot in different picturesque locations in Austria, including the Wiltener Basilika in Innsbruck, Tyrol.
