The song ‘Naatu Naatu’ appears at an important point in this period film, when the two protagonists dance to retaliate against the British officials who have humiliated them. The award-winning song (Golden Globe for the best original song went to the composer MM Keervani) was filmed in Ukraine. About the choice of Ukraine, ‘location guru” Ramji Natarajan explains in an interview: “When they filmed RRR, they wanted a building that would look like something Victorian, or from the British colonial era. We initially wanted to do Delhi, but things have changed so much there and most of the Indian colonial-era buildings don’t look like they would have a century ago,” Another compelling reason to shoot in Ukraine was that the Covid pandemic had restricted travel, making it difficult to rope in foreign (white) actors and Ukraine provided a wealth of white actors and extras who could stand in for the British. As an unprecedented bonus, 100 dancers from the Kiev ballet also joined the production. Filming took place at the Mariinskyi Palace (Ukraine Presidential Palace better known to the world as the official residence of President Zelensky) in Kyiv, a few months before the onset of the Russian occupation of Ukraine. Some scenes of the film were shot in Mezhyhirya (the palace house museum) and one of the film studios near Kyiv. Director Rajamouli said in an interview that he believed that they secured permission to shoot the dance sequence in front of Zelensky’s official residence ‘because the President of Ukraine himself was a television actor’. The lyrics are written by Chandrabose and the catchy song was performed by Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava while the high-octane dance number 'Naatu Naatu' (the hook steps of this song became a viral sensation) was choreographed by Prem Rakshit. The elaborate baroque facade of the palace provided the perfect dynamic background for the scene, while the size and space of the foreground ensured that mid and wide shots could be used to capture the dancing duo’s electric performance. The turquoise and cream-colored facades with hints of fuschia in places, perfectly offset the pastel shades of the women’s 1920s costumes replete with hats and feathers. The whole scene is composed in the form of a tableau as Senthil Kumar’s cinematography brilliantly captures the scene in close ups and long shots to look like a painting. In the central piece of this dance number, the groups part along a central axis with all the white women going behind the two dancing Indian men and all the white men going behind the British officer, Jake. Rajamouli says that when he composed the scene, he had in mind Moses parting the ocean in Cecile DeMille’s classic, Ten Commandments (1956).
