Patiala House

Gattu (Akshay Kumar), an Asian British citizen from Southall, London, must give up his dream of representing the England cricket team, as his father, Gurtej (Rishi Kapoor), hates the way white people have historically treated the South Asian community. While Gattu’s mother (Dimple Kapadia) empathises with her son, she is unable to confront her husband. Gattu leads the mundane life of running a convenience store in Southall. His cousins hate him for not taking a stand against his father. Gattu meets Simran (Anushka Sharma) and her surrogate son, Zeeshan, at a family event. Zeeshan starts encouraging Gattu to chase his passion for cricket. Gattu eventually gets a chance to play for the English team; however, his father’s disapproval starts affecting his performance on the field. Finally, on the day of an important match, Gurtej realises that he has been unfair to his son after watching him lie in a television interview about his father being proud of him. He lands at the stadium where Gattu is playing. Even though he was performing poorly, he finishes off in style as he bowls out cricketer Andrew Symonds (who makes a cameo in the climax as himself). Following this, Gurtej apologises to Gattu for prohibiting him from following his dreams, and all ends well.

    Film Location Analysis

    By Shikha Jhingan

The film was shot in Woodford Green, which became an important location as Gurtej’s home. The film tries to capture the social setting of a typical Southall neighbourhood with a gurdwara and a community hall without romanticising these spaces. The production team decided against shooting scenes of the family home in Southall to avoid crowds. The scenes depicting the interiors of the Kehlon home were shot in Bombay.

Many of the dramatic scenes were shot in the front yard of Gurtej’s imposing house, where we see him challenging the local police, calling them racists. The flashback sequences explain why Gurtej Singh is bitter about being treated as a South Asian immigrant in the UK.

The front yard or porch of the family home is used for festival rituals as well as dramatic scenes when the younger generation of the family tries to confront the father for his authoritarian ways. The porch becomes a liminal space where the younger lot can talk about their aspirations and secret passions that can allow them to become integrated into multi-racial British society. However, the ties to the family and the ethnic community prevent them from doing that. The women of the family, daughters and daughters-in-law, show their rebellious spirit, but both Gattu and his older brother are unable to muster the courage to support them.

The scenes showing Gattu working in a convenience store as part of his mundane life were shot in Wealdstone. According to a newspaper report, a food and wine corner was turned into a convenience store for the shooting. The film also shows Gattu practising his bowling every night. This physical activity away from the watchful eyes of his authoritarian family becomes therapeutic for him. It is here that Gattu acquires some secret admirers who recognise his talent as a fast bowler and his potential to play for the British team.

The climax of the film, when Gattu decides to play for the English team, was shot at the Trent Bridge stadium. The conflict between the father and the son is resolved when the son becomes part of a spectacle that is broadcast live on television. The father rushes to the stadium to see his son play in a style that reminds him of his favourite Indian cricket star.
