Bablu (Shahrukh Khan) is a chef who finds himself in complicated situations when he is mistaken for his lookalike, Manu (Shahrukha Khan), a gangster wanted by the police. Bablu falls in love with his hotel's owner, Sonia (Juhi Chawla). Like many films about doubles, the film plays with mistaken identities to move its plot. Lily (Sonali Bendre) is Manu's girlfriend and unknowingly tries to flirt with Bablu. Bablu's mother (Farida Jalal) becomes confused about her son's changing persona. Manu wants to kill Bablu and take his place. With both Bablu and Manu now present together, the police and others find it hard to identify the criminal. In the climactic moment, Bablu's mother says her son is a trained wrestler, and if a contest is staged between the two men, her son will successfully pull her to his side. When the pulling starts, Bablu is unable to see his mother in pain and lets go of her hand. While the police think Bablu is Manu and try to grab him, the mother reveals how only her son would have cared about the pain she was suffering. Manu now threatens her with a gun, but instead, Lilly shoots him because she realises how corrupt and ruthless her boyfriend is.

    Film Location Analysis

    By Kaushik Bhaumik

Three songs (dance) ‘Kathai Aankjon Wali Ek Ladki’, ‘Ek Sharaarat’ and ‘Ladna Jhagadna’ comeprise the European locations for the film. All three songs are cutaways from scenes in Mumbai. The first song is a fantasy cutaway while the last two are situational where something happening in India surreally leads to action in Europe. The locations are sparse indicating restricted budgets, permissions and shoot schedule.

‘Kathai Aankjon Wali Ek Ladki’ is entirely bereft of any location markers being shot entirely in a non-descript Swiss countryside mainly consisting of rolling meadows in a valley. Occasional architectural markers such as a church with spires, rural houses or local highways intrude.

‘Ek Sharaarat’ is mostly shot in a park/amusement park on the Lake Geneva front at Vevey, Switzerland. The lawns, park benches, various signage or pop art-style decorative elements are used as props for the song. The song culminates in Prague with a short sequence shot in front of the National Museum and then some dance moves through the iconic St Wenceslas Square. We get a brief glimpse of the legendary statue of Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia, astride a horse, one of the definitive features of the city of Prague and indeed the entire Czech Republic. The song then winds up with a short sequence in Vevey.

‘Ladna Jhagadna’ is a complex song intercutting between Prague and Vevey. It begins with one couple singing and dancing in front of the Troja Palace, a 17th c. Baroque palace that now holds the 19th c. Czech art collection of the City Gallery. The Swiss sequence unfolds again in the park on the Vevey Lake Geneva front with another couple (the heroes in both sets being the same) singing, dancing, walking through the park. There is a sequence in Prague city around the St Wenceslas Square area in the Czech segment of the song, otherwise the song uses very tightly locations in the grounds of Troja. From time to time we can see the city of Vevey climbing up the hillside as backdrop to the lake front. There are also some sequences in the Swiss countryside inside and in the environs of Vevey. The highlight of the Swiss segment are a couple of sequences featuring the Great Fork and the statue of Carrlie Chaplin that gazes upon the Fork from inside the park on to the lake where the fork is embedded in the waters of the lake. Chaplin of course was one of the most notable residents of Vevey, he died in 1977. The Great Fork, a very Claes Oldenburg-style Pop Art artefact, designed by Jean-Pierre Zaugg, ,is a huge fork in stainless steel and is part of the Alimentarium, a museum dedicated to the history of food and the history of Nestlé, one of the world’s largest food and drink corporations, headquartered at Vevey.
