    Film Location Analysis

    By Shikha Jhingan

In the time travel sequences, the film takes us to Scotland, which is made to represent Cambridge, where Jai is working as faculty in the Mathematics department. The first sequence shows Jai and Diya (Katrina Kaif) driving to a hospital as she goes into labour. Jai is shocked that it’s been two years since he has been married as he cannot recollect anything. The camera frames the two characters in a heated argument, as we see a snowfall. The view of the location is blurred reflecting on Jai’s own confused state. He does not know where he is and takes a wrong turn. Diya decides to drive herself and asks Jai to sit in the passenger seat. Through the moving vehicle we see a signboard of Cambridge, which orients Jai to his location. A second POV frames a double decker bus carrying a billboard of a Music Festival in 2018, which is another sign for Jai about his time travel. Diya tells him that she has been living in this cold, depressing dreadful place for the last two years.

The hospital sequence involves the role of several local actors as the hospital staff. As he hears about the baby’s arrival, Jai dashes out of the hospital. The camera keeps him in view while moving around Jai in a 360-degree tracking shot.

In the second flashforward we see Jai teaching his class that is lined with smart screens. Each student in the large hallway has her/his own screen. When Jai learns that this is 2034, he turns to look at himself at the transparent screen surfaces. He is shocked to see his grey hair and a beard. The panoramic view of the dome-shaped hall shows a futuristic building with modernist architecture. But in the next shot we see him walking through Glasgow university with typical Scottish architecture. Through the use of tracking camera, we get an immersive feel of the space that Jai is encountering for the ‘first time’ in this sequence. Through the use of an echoing sound design, his alienation from the space that he is walking through gets enhanced. At a distance we see two punks walking through the university.

The next sequence shows Jai’s son driving him to the civil court for his divorce. The colour palette gets skewed towards shades of grey in this futuristic vision. The camera shows the car driving towards the Riverside Museum of Glasgow, with its innovative geometrical design. The AI of the car announces that they have arrived at the civil court.

Jai realises that he is at the civil court because he is getting a divorce.

After speaking to his mother, he realises that his life has gone horribly wrong, and both his son and his wife feel betrayed by him.

The song ‘Teri Khai Mangdi’ opens with shots of a futuristic city built with steel and glass architecture, bridges, walkways, and tunnels that seem to lead to nowhere. The sequence includes the shots of the Bells Bridge and the Red Tunnel in Glasgow.

In the last section of the film, we return to warmer shades as Jai realises that he was in a state of time travel and everything seems to be fine in the present life, and that he needs to value the people and relationships around him.
