Thugs of Hindostan

In the year 1795, the Indian subcontinent was known as ‘Hindustan’ or 'Hindostan.' John Clive (Lloyd Owen), of the East India Company, kills King Mirza Sikander Baig (Ronit Roy). A killing spree of his people follows, and the land is taken away by Lord Clive. Zafira Baig (Fatima Sana Shaikh), Sikander Baig's daughter, survives along with the king's general Khudabaksh (Amitabh Bachchan). Khudabaksh succeeds in defeating the enemy and brings up Zafira, who learns to be a warrior. He is now known as Azaad.

Several years later, we meet Firangi (Aamir Khan), an informer for the British and a small-time thug who has a friendship with a dancer named Suraiyya (Katrina Kaif). Khudabaksh creates a band of bandits known as "thugs," who are skilled in sea warfare. Firangi is hired to handle the "thugs" by the expanding East India Company and Lord Clive. Firangi manages to impress Azaad and joins the latter's group. Firangi informs the East India Company about Azaad's location leading up to the battle, and after a change of heart, Firangi saves Azaad. Meanwhile, Azaad surrenders to ensure Firangi and Zafira manage to escape.

Firangi and Zafira then set up an elaborate trap to attack Clive's incoming ships. The "thugs" manage to survive the warfare that follows. Suraiyya is then roped in to set a trap for Clive during a performance. Firangi acts as a trusted informer for Clive, only to save Azaad and other prisoners. Zafira kills Clive and is crowned queen, while  Firangi, Suraiyya, and Shanichar (Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub) steal a ship from Zafira and run off to England.

    Film Location Analysis

    By Kaushik Bhaumik

The main locations for the Malta shoot were the Mediterranean Sea and Malta’s largest fort, Fort Ricasoli, situated on the Mediterranean in the village of Kalkara. The Malta shoot occupies a very small part of the film, the main sequences being shot in the Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, and in the jungles of Thailand. Undoubtedly, the yellow sandstone fort with its Mediterranean fort allows for a continuity of Islamicate cultural motifs between Malta and Rajasthan, making it believable that all this is indeed happening in India.

Fort Ricasoli serves as the location for the bastion of the rebels in the film, led by Azaad. CGI work ensures that we are made to believe a fortress in Rajasthan leads directly to the sea and naval warfare. Indeed, the battle sequences on the sea are heavily developed in CGI. The early Malta sequence quickly gives way to long sequences in Rajasthan and Thailand. The longest Malta sequence in the film occurs between the points 1h 17m and 1h 30m in the film. It consists of a bazaar sequence, followed by a flying trapeze fight sequence between Firangi and rebel commander Azaad, and ending in a swordfight sequence featuring Zafira in an escape on horseback. The Malta sequence ends fittingly with the Azaad, whose bastion Malta was supposed to be, blowing himself and a ship up, on sea, in full view of the harbour in front of Fort Ricasoli.

While not much of what happens in Malta uses the Maltese location to any special effect, other than produce a specific location for rebel leader Azaad, the Mediterranean does provide the specific locale for one of the highlights of the films—two seafaring galleons constructed in situ in Malta, each weighing 200 tonnes of wood, metal, and cloth. A 1,000 people worked on building the ships for over a year, supervised by the director Acharya and a team of European naval architects. Ino Bonello led the team building the ships. The entire carpentry team for the boat construction came from a village of shipbuilders in Malta. Indeed, director Acharya claims that the idea about the ships led to the choice of Malta as the location for the sea sequences since Malta had tanks big enough to be filled up with water, on which the large ships could be floated and filmed. The tanks allowed for all kinds of SFX and action sequence paraphernalia—wave machines, rain machines, cannon fire etc., in addition to wirework rigs for physical flight in fights. One of the ships was physically blown up at the end of the Malta schedule (the one Azaad destroys).

Although denied by the producers, there was definitely an attempt to cash in on the huge Indian markets for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise through such a move. However, the move turned out to be a loss for the film. It pushed the budget of the film to $38 million, making Thugs the most expensive Bollywood film until then, while the action sequences shot in Malta, including those involving the ships, were canned by producer Chopra and re-shot at the Yash Raj Films studio in Mumbai. Also, the sea sequences come out clumsy, as well as marred by mediocre CGI effects.
