Ishkq in Paris

The film opens with a narrator paying homage to Paris as a city of love but also saying you can fall in love in the city but not really find love. Akash (Rhehan Malliek) and Ishkq (Preity Zinta), two complete strangers, after having met on a train from Rome to Paris, end up exploring Paris together, which is why the city unfolds in the film through a series of iconic and other locations. They have a no-baggage pact that is Ishkq's idea. She is a photographer and writer who does not believe in love or deep commitments. She wants her freedom to lead a hassle-free existence. So, the next morning, the two end up saying bye to each other without making any promises. While Ishkq manages to move on from the fling, Akash ends up falling in love with her. Following a series of heartbreaks and misunderstandings, the two end up reuniting in Paris.

    Film Location Analysis

    By Kaushik Bhaumik

Clearly inspired by Linklater’s Before series, the film is mostly shot indoors in Paris, with some sequences shot in Prague standing in for Paris. It begins with a long sequence on the TGV Lyon-Bourg-Saint Maurice, since only this route allowed for a continuous 7-hour shoot. The Paris sequence begins at the Gare du Nord, followed by a longish sequence around and on the Eiffel Tower around the 11-minute mark. The sequence is shot through twilight to dark, and we see the tower lit up. The couple banter and flirt on the tower, living up to Paris’s and the tower’s reputation as a romantic spot. This is followed by a midnight sequence at a bar that ends with the couple chatting and falling off to sleep on a bench in a park. Romantic locations kick in again with a brief sequence in a café at the cobblestoned Montmartre, where the couple have coffee and part ways, with a wistful mistiming thrown in. We see the famous Le Consulat café of Van Gogh fame.

The song ‘Jaane Bhi De’ takes on a tour of the usual sights of Paris—the Seine banks, the bridges, the Pont des Arts (the Love Lock Bridge where lovers tie a lock with their names on a tag to the bridge and throw the key away into the river), Versailles etc. Paris is shown as a city of romantic walks, where people fall in love.

The film then abruptly breaks to Prague, where the couple meet in front of a villa masquerading as a museum. The final sequence of the film is a mash-up of sequences shot on Parisian and Prague locations, where Ishkq rushes to the rail station to stop Akash from leaving Paris without her. There is a bizarre note with the hero mentioning that he is sure to try out the Laksa noodle soup at the Gare du Nord, which has a great reputation. Of course, Ishkq nabs him while he is sampling his Laksa.

The Prague locations were arranged for by director Imtiaz Ali, who had shot Rockstar there in 2011.
